Professional Standards Enforcement: Practices and Procedures

6 PDP Credits – 1 or 2 days (second day includes a mock hearing)

This course is intended to provide REALTORS® with an understanding of how to streamline the handling of complaints and the hearing process. The material begins with a review of the requirements that the Business Practices Committee members must follow when handling a complaint. The procedure for handling complaints varies from board to board. However, the elements of the complaint, which need to be considered each time are consistent.

These elements include:

  • the initial handling of the complaint;
  • the investigation;
  • determining potential breaches;
  • the hearing procedure; and
  • how the decision is made.

This practical course is designed to better understand a committee member's duties. It is important to have a broad picture of the methods used in resolving disputes, and where the Business Practices committee fits in. It is also important to know the differences between the Real Estate Council of British Columbia, and the Business Practices Committee.
